「革命を始めよう」——これほど甘やかに歌われた闘志の言葉が、かつてあっただろうか。
日本のインディーロック／ポップ・アーティスト、齊藤海のデビューEP『seashells』の幕開けを飾る「Look Back On The Past」は、過去を越えていく旅の始まりを告げる一曲だ。
楽曲は、波が打ち寄せては引いていくような、きらめくリズムの往復運動で進んでいく。歌詞は詩的でありながらも芯があり、失敗や平凡を乗り越えて生きていくという、生命力に満ちたメッセージを内包している。
齊藤海の歌声は、低音と高音が織りなす静かなコントラストの中に強さを秘めている。感情を帯びたギターのストロークが、ヴァースとコーラスをしっかりと支え、終盤ではサーフギターが鳴り響く——まるで、夜の闇の中を照らす灯台のように、彷徨う魂の道しるべとなって。
「私たちは旋風の中にいる」——人生は痛みと喜びの予測不能な奔流だ。モーターバイクの忘却。乗って走り出せ。
「Isolation Room」は、鋭く打ち出されるギターと、心臓のように脈打つボンゴのビートで幕を開ける。
ヴァースは、ダンサブルでありながらヘッドバンギングを誘うような力強さで展開される。
コーラスでは、齊藤海の歌声が印象的なキャッチーさで響き渡り、私たちを引き込む。その詞には、「強いられた状況」に置かれた誰かの内面、そして「どう折り合いをつけていくか」という苦悩が描かれている。
「痛みもない 悲しみもない 欲望さえも消えていく」——そう歌う彼女の言葉は、まるでPink Floydの『Comfortably Numb』を思わせる冷ややかさを帯びながら、深い共感を呼び起こす。
このような深刻なテーマを、彼女は最も音楽的に感染力があり、キャッチーな方法で私たちに語りかけています。
「A Safe Place To Cry」は、齊藤海のソロ・スタジオ録音によるこの小さな物語の、最終章を静かに彩る。
哀しみを帯びた旋律が織りなすリフは、彼女の言葉の奥底へと私たちを導いていく。「あなたは孤独を愛してる、それは私も同じ」——これは、痛みを抱えながらも、それを互いに認めることができない心のすれ違いなのかもしれない。
ヴァースでは、感情の高低を描く2つのフレーズが、別れ際のジェットコースターのような心の揺れを巧みに表現している。「本当の気持ちは、沈黙の中に埋められている」——それは、自分の心を言葉にできないまま、誰にも触れられない想いを抱え続ける告白。
そして、すべてが燃え尽きたそのあとに、彼女のギターがシューゲイズのように夢幻的に響き、音は余韻を残して優しく崩れ落ちていく。

生粋のパンクス
“Let’s start revolution.” A fierce battle cry has never been so sweetly sung . But Japanese indie rock/ pop artist, Umi Saito , nails it on the opener of her debut e.p. , Seashells.
Look Back On The Past has a back and fourth shimmering flow like waves washing to shore. Lyrically, Saito paints her words poetically about a life-affirming wild journey away from past failures and mediocrity.
The vocals are succinctly performed with a dual low/high synergy. Acoustic guitar is strummed passionately by Saito on the emotionally moving verse and chorus Then towards the end, she surprises us with a surf guitar that echoes through like a watchful lighthouse shining in the darkness to guide the rebel on his way . Saito sings,” We’re in the whirlwind.” Life is an unpredictable blender of pain and pleasure. Motorbike oblivion . Get on and ride .
The next track , Isolation Room , kicks in with a punchy acoustic guitar and throbbing bongo beats as the verse takes off with a danceable as well as headbanging force. Saito sings the chorus with compelling catchiness . The words in the verse speak of someone in a forced situation. Also, about the struggle and how to cope with it. Her lyrics poignantly expressed in the words,” No pain , not sad , even desire is gone .” Which brings to mind Pink Floyd’s cold sentiments of Comfortably Numb . Saito carries such a serious topic as she pours herself out to us in the most musically infectious, catchy way .
The final chapter of Saito’s first solo studio recording is called A Safe Place To Cry . The melancholic yet melodic riffs played are a passage to the open heart of her words . She sings,” I know you love your solitude, and it’s the same for me .” Maybe a way to say the experiences of a painful heartache where both sides won’t give in to admit it hurts.
The verse has two brilliant pieces that move from highs and lows that capture the roller coaster of emotions one feels in the end of a relationship. As Saito says, “ My true feelings are buried in the silence.” A confession of withholding one’s heart and mind.
Then, from the ashes rise a dreamy ,resonating shoegazey crescendo by her reverberating guitar which brings it all to a cascading close.
The art , packing cd sleeve , recording , and mixing are creatively constructed with the D.I.Y. spirit by her . Saito may shout to Look Back On The Past , but we are excited to look at her musical future.
